Hello all. I am trying to extract the audio from some avi and wmv files I have on my system so that I can get rid of some of these large video files. I can not seem to find a program that works with jaws that will allow me to extract the audio from these file formats though. I've tried cucisoft's software, as well as the absolute video converter with no success. Does anyone know of a free, or low cost program that will do this? Thank u in advance for any help you may be able to give me.

Not sure whether it will work though as you've tried others. Anyways, its free, give it a go. Sam

You may also try TMPGEnc from www.pegasys-inc.com.
It doesn't do wmv conversion to my knowledge, but the free version I used handles avi and mpg to wav, mp3, or ogg and likewise compressions formats dutifully.

The link Sam provided didn't work for some reason, but I stumbled across a very nifty utility yesterday from a company called Xilisoft. This software will convert all video formats including vob, divex, wmv, avi, and mpeg. U can convert the files to wma, ogg, mp3, wav, and a couple of others I believe. It's $35 to buy, but if you just want to get some video files off of your system, the 30 day trial should suffice. I know I'm answering my own question here, but thaught I throw the information out here for anyone else who may want to give it a try. It works well with jaws, u just tab to the various menue options. A link for the free trail is

I tried adobe audition version 1.5, and it didn't seem to work well with jaws. I miss its predecessor cool edit. Version 1.2 works great with jaws, and it has some nice filtering capabilities that I haven't found with sound forge. The only issue here is that the program is out of date, so it doesn't support some of the modern file types
